Apaches bounce back with 2 wins By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch After having their 17 game win streak snapped, then suffering back to back losses, the Cochise College Apaches got back into the win column last week with wins over Pima and South Mountain. On Saturday in Tucson, the Apaches scalped the Aztecs 104-72. Michael Maya hit six three-pointers in the game as the Apaches, who led by 11 at the half, increased their lead to 40 the second half. Maya finished the game with 22 points. Sophomore Nathan Sobey had 16, Matt Korcheck 14 points, Jerry Duckworth 13 and Nnamdi Ezenwa had 10. Earlier in the week, at home against South Mountain, Cochise saw a 21 point second half lead cut to two before coming away with a 97-88 win. Korcheck led Cochise in scoring with 24 points this game. Maya had 18 and Sobey 14. Cochise led 47-38 at the half and upped that lead to 76-55 just past midway of the second half. The Apaches led by 10, 88-78, with three minutes to go when South Mountain went on a 8-0 run pulling within two with 95 seconds remaining. A clutch 3 by Maya with 39 seconds remaining gave the Apaches a six point edge. Cochise, 22-4 on the season hold a one-game lead over Arizona Western College, whom they visit tonight The Apaches are at home this Saturday night before closing out the regular season with a rare Friday night game Feb. 24 against Phoenix. Cochise women The Pima College Lady Aztecs beat Cochise 71-67 Saturday. The Apaches trailed by eight with four minutes to go and had the ball trailing by two with 24 seconds to go when a blocked shot resulted in a jump ball and the possession arrow favored Pima preserving the win for the Aztecs. Johnishia Welles led Cochise with 16 points. JJ Alli followed with 12 points and Valerie Galvez had 11 points. The Lady Apaches, drop to 16-10 on the season and are at Arizona Western College tonight. Cochise had beaten Pima in the first meeting in Douglas, 72-62.
