Lady Bulldogs experience off night at SectionalsBy Bruce Whetten
Going into Sectionals the second seeded Douglas Lady Bulldogs were one of the favorites.
At the end of their first round game with seventh seeded Queen Creek they were one of the first teams bounced out of the tournament losing 48-28 Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Flowing Wells High School in Tucson.
The Lady Bulldogs struggled all night long against the Queen Creek Lady Bulldogs.
“We just couldn’t make our shots,” Douglas’ basketball coach Clint Hill said. “Plus Queen Creek was relentless on defense.”
Douglas trailed 10-7 at the end of the first quarter and 16-12 at the half.
In the second half Queen Creek outscored Douglas 32-16 knocking Douglas out of that tournament.
Just three girls scored for Douglas. Aleen Nunez led Douglas in scoring with 11 points, Karina Avechuco followed with 10 and Nythzia Machado followed with seven.
Douglas, 22-4, will host Prescott tonight at 7 p.m. in the first round of the state playoffs.
