In regard to controversy over “government”
In regard to the current controversy over “government”, I offer the following. I don’t want more government, I don’t want less government, I want the right amount of government.
What does that mean? It means I want the FAA to assure me of safe flying in the sky, I want the FDA to assure me of safe drugs to use, I want the USDA to assure my food and meat is inspected and safe to eat, I want the EPA to assure me air and water are clean and safe, I want the DOT to regulate safe highways, trucks, cars, rail. I want government to provide education to the young, safe guard the elderly through Medicare and social security. I want the government to provide a safety net for the unemployed in these difficult economic times. I want government to provide me with police, firemen, military to safe guard me, my property and my country.
I understand many in the Tea Party are against government “entitlements”, at the same time they collect Medicare, social security and veteran medical coverage. They are entitled to it and should collect it. I don’t want the government to have control over my body, whether or not I use birth control. I do not want government deciding who should marry and who should not.
I do not want government teaching religion in public schools. Parents should teach their children religion if they want them to have religious instruction. I was mainly a single mother, who reared two sons without any government or other financial help. I was fortunate to have an education, was always gainfully employed, never laid off or lost a job.
That set of circumstances applied to the 1950’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. Unfortunately that is not the case today. Paying taxes are what assures us of a civilized society. If you don’t want government, move to Somalia.
