AARP hosts the House of Hope

Age does not affect the desire to help others; and AARP is one of many local examples to prove it.

AARP hosted special guest Elsa Varela, Coordinator for the House of Hope in Douglas at their monthly meeting on Friday, March 16 at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall at the corner of 10th St. and D Avenue.

Varela shared valuable information with AARP members about the House of Hope. Since the beginning, everybody showed a deep interest to Varela’s comments due to the importance of the service the House provides to battered women and children who fall victims of domestic violence.

As a result, all those present at the meeting decided to include a series of activities to help raise some goods needed at the House of Hope. They informed to Varela that they will raise diapers, toilet supplies, food and clothing to deliver it in the following couple of months.

Also, members decided to honor current women at the shelter by celebrating with them Mother’s Day in May.

At the end of the meeting, both Varela and members got excited to begin working together to benefit local women who still suffers due to domestic violence. Varela thanked AARP’s group for helping the shelter despite their own needs.
