The Mexican Consulate in Douglas and the City of Douglas gathered the most outstanding women of both sides of the border area in order to honor them for their leadership, remarkable work and community vocation on Monday March 26 at the Visitor Center, in an effort to commemorate the International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8.

“It is impossible to imagine modern society without the contribution and empowerment of women,” said Mexican Consul in Douglas, Oscar De La Torre. “This is the perfect occasion to appreciate and celebrate those women who through their work contribute every day to the formation of a more just, healthy, safe, humane, educated, charitable and informed community, and to award those that spend part of their time to serving those most vulnerable.”

Justice of the Peace, Precinct 2 Alma Vildosola, expressed her joy of seeing so many valuable women that have made Douglas and the surrounding area a better place. She highlighted the progress that women have achieved in the past 50 years, however, acknowledged that there are many other women who still do not have this capability, and reminded everyone about the importance of not abandoning efforts to provide more opportunities to grow to local and regional women.
