Lady Bulldog netters extend winning streak to four By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch The Douglas Lady Bulldog tennis team won all three of its matches last week extending its winning streak to four straight games. On Thursday the Lady Bulldogs beat Tucson Sahuaro 8-1. Kim Cormier, playing No. 1 singles for Douglas, won her match 6-2, 6-2. Tanya Nunez lost her first set 6-4, won the second 6-2 then lost tie-breaker 10-7 at No. 2 singles. Argentina Morales was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles and Valeria Cordova won 6-2, 6-0 in her No. 4 singles match. Erika Romero won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Marissa Aguirre was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 6 singles. In doubles play Cormier and Nunez won their match 8-2 while Morales and Cordova posted an 8-1 win. In No. 3 doubles Romero and Aguilar were 8-1 winners. In junior varsity play Kim Ruiz fell 8-2, Emily Owen lost 8-6, Fernanda Quiroz won 8-1 and Andrea Quiroz and Sienna Martinez both won 8-0. In doubles play Ruiz and Fernanda Quiroz won 8-6; Emily Owen and Andrea Quiroz were 8-4 winners. “All the girls are playing very well, with Valeria Cordova, Erika Romero, and Marissa Aguirre remaining undefeated in single competition,” Douglas’ coach Ken Cormier said. “Being solid from number one through six makes us a pretty tough team to compete against.” On March 27 the Lady Bulldogs shutout Valley Union 9-0 at the DHS tennis courts. Cormier was a 6-0, 6-0 winner; Nunez won 6-0, 6-2; Morales won 6-1, 6-2; Cordova won 6-0, 6-1; Romero won 6-1, 6-0 and Aguirre won by forfeit. In doubles play Aguirre and Cordova were 8-4 winners and Owen and Romero won 8-0. The No. 3 doubles match Douglas won by forfeit. “I'm most impressed with our intensity on the court regardless of the level of competition that were facing,” Coach Cormier said. “That attitude should pay off when they face much tougher competition at the state tournament.” On Monday, March 26 the Lady Bulldogs shutout Tombstone 9-0. Cormier won her match 6-0, 6-2; Nunez won the first set 6-4, lost the second 6-4 then won the tie-breaker 10-1.
