Two injured in collision

Two Douglas residents, one of which was a female who was six months pregnant, were injured Sunday evening in a two-vehicle accident at 8th Street and Pan American.

According to Jose Duarte of the Douglas Police Dept. at around 5:30 p.m. Douglas Police Officers and Douglas Fire Department Personnel responded to the area after getting reports of injuries in the accident.

Sgt. Duarte said the Douglas Fire Department had to use of the “Jaws for Life” to help open the door to one of the vehicles in order to extricate the pregnant female who is not being identified.

Duarte said preliminary investigation of the accident indicates a Dodge Stratus was headed North on Pan American Highway as it approached the intersection of 8th Street and Pan American Highway. The vehicle was being driven by a 17 year old, who sustained minor injuries and was transported to Southeast Arizona Medical Center for treatment.

The second vehicle, a Cobalt, was stationary on 8th Street about to enter Pan American Highway and failed to yield to the Dodge Stratus. The Cobalt was driving by a 26 year old, who was extricated by Douglas Fire Personnel, was transported to Southeast Arizona Medical Center for her injuries and precautionary measure as she appeared to be pregnant.

Sgt. Duarte said Douglas Police Officers will continue with their investigation and citations are pending for the driver of the Cobalt, after it field to yield the right away to traffic.

Douglas Police Officers would like to remind all drivers to pay attention to traffic conditions, take your time in your travels, don’t be in a rush and have all the occupants in the vehicle, always wear their seatbelts.

“It’s the law,” he said.
