Lady Bulldogs extend win streak to six

The Douglas Lady Bulldogs tennis team chalked up two more wins last week extending their win streak to six straight games.

On April 5 the Lady Bulldogs recorded their seventh shutout of the season blanking the St. David Tigers 9-0.

Kim Cormier playing No. 1 singles for Douglas posted a 6-3, 6-2 win while at No. 2 singles Tanya Nunez was a 6-4, 6-3 winner.

Argentina Morales won her No. 3 singles match 6-3,6-3.

Valeria Cordova was a 6-2,6-1 winner at No. 4 singles while Erika Romero cruised to a 6-0,6-2 win at No. 5 singles.

At No.6 singles Marissa Agurrie was 6-0, 6-1 winner.

In doubles Cormier and Nunez won 8-1; Morales and Cordova were 8-2 winners and Romero and Aguirre won their match 8-2.

In the win over Tombstone Cormier won 10-0; Nunez won 10-5; Morales won 10-0;

Romero won 10-1; Aguirre won 10-2 and Kim Ruiz won 10-2 at No. 6 singles.

In doubles play Cormier and Nunez were 10-5 winners;

Morales and Romero won their match 10-0 and Aguirre and Ruiz were 10-2 winners.

In the lone JV match Emily Owen won 8-0.

On March 27 the Lady Bulldogs shutout Valley Union 9-0 at the DHS tennis courts.

Cormier was a 6-0, 6-0 winner; Nunez won 6-0, 6-2; Morales won 6-1, 6-2; Cordova won 6-0, 6-1; Romero won 6-1, 6-0 and Aguirre won by forfeit.

In doubles play Aguirre and Cordova were 8-4 winners and Owen and Romero won 8-0.

The No. 3 doubles match Douglas won by forfeit.

“I'm most impressed with our intensity on the court regardless of the level of competition that were facing,” Coach Cormier said. “That attitude should pay off when they face much tougher competition at the state tournament.”

On Monday, March 26 the Lady Bulldogs shutout Tombstone 9-0.

Cormier won her match 6-0, 6-2; Nunez won the first set 6-4, lost the second 6-4 then won the tie-breaker 10-1.

Morales won 6-0, 6-1; Cordova was a 6-2, 6-0 winner; Romero won 6-0, 6-1 and Aguirre won 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles play Cormier and Nunez won their match 8-6, Morales and Cordova were 8-1 winners and Romero and Aguirre were 8-2 winners.

In junior varsity play Ruiz won 8-1; Owen won 8-1 and Fernanda Quiroz won 8-1.

In doubles Andrea Quiroz and Sienna Martinez lost 8-3.

Douglas, 8-1, will be at Benson today, St. David on Thursday and then host Bisbee on Friday.

All the matches start at 3:30 p.m.
