Douglas’ No.1 doubles team of Argentina Morales and Valeria Cordova beat a team from Pima 10-2 in the second round (had a 1st round bye), then lost to the eventual champions Duncan team 10-6, which was their toughest match of the tournament.
The No. 2 doubles team of Erika Romero and Marissa Aguirre had a great tournament, the coach said. They won their round match over Pima 10-2 then defeated the second seed St. David team 10-8; then defeated Duncan 10-3, before losing to Thatcher 10-4 in the semi-finals.
In singles competition, Tanya Nunez won her first match over a Pima opponent 10-0 then defeated her opponent from St. David 10-2 before losing to the eventual winner from Miami 10-2.
Kim Cormier defeated her first round opponent from Morenci 10-0 (first round bye), then won her second match 10-0 over her opponent from Benson, in the semi-finals she defeated her Silver City challenger 7-5, 6-4. In the finals she lost to Kendra Holliday of Miami 6-0, 6-1.
“It was the first tournament championship won by Douglas in six years,” the coach said “It was a long but fun day, and a great way to prepare for the upcoming state tournament.”
