Lady Bulldogs win two games

With just five games left in the regular season the Douglas Lady Bulldogs chalked up two more wins last week knocking off Willcox 10-2 on Wednesday and Bisbee 16-4 on Thursday.

The two wins give Douglas a 20-7 record and move Coach Abe Grijalva to 297, three shy of 300 career wins.

Against Willcox the Lady Cowgirls tagged Douglas’ starting pitcher Syndea Estrella for a solo home run in the top half of the first taking a quick 1-0 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs came back in the bottom half of the inning as Nythzia Machado led off with a triple and later tied the game at 1 scoring on a passed ball. Andrea Lugo then gave Douglas the lead when she singled and later scored on an error.

Karina Avechuco’s sacrifice fly in the third scored Victoria Mariscal giving Douglas a 3-1 lead.

Douglas added four more runs in the fourth padding its lead to 7-1.

Willcox scored a run in the fifth only to see Douglas respond with three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 10-2 lead.

Estrella ended up being the winning pitcher giving up two runs off five hits while fanning six and walking four.

Machado hit 4 for 4 this game with two doubles and a triple. Lugo and Mariscal each hit 2 for 4; Aileen Alegria was 1 for 2 with a double, Marissa Morales 1 for 3 with a double and Avechuco 1 for 4 also with a double.

In the win over Bisbee the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead scoring four runs in the top of the first and another in the second.

Bisbee scored once in the bottom of the third making the score 5-1.

The Lady Bulldogs responded with a five run rally in the top of the fourth doubling the score to 10-1.

Bisbee scored twice in the bottom of the fourth cutting Douglas’ lead to 10-3.

After scoring three runs in the top of the fifth to go up 13-3, Alegria sealed the game up with a towering three run home run to left center field that gave Douglas a 16-3 lead.

Bisbee scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth before the game was called on account of the 10-run mercy rule.

Jennifer Montoya started the game in the circle for Douglas and went four innings giving up three runs off three hits while fanning three and walking three.

Estrella came in to close out the game and gave up one run off one hit while fanning two.

Mishell Quinonez hit 2 for 4 for Douglas while Briana Salcido was 2 for 3. Machado, Alegria, Mariscal, Morales and Yina Mungia each had one hit.

The Lady Bulldogs now face a major challenge playing Buena, Empire, Sahuaro, Cienega and Benson in the next two weeks.

The coach said playing these types of teams just before the playoffs will be good because these are the quality of teams his girls will be facing in the postseason.

The Douglas JV’s beat Empire March 29 14-2.

Alyssa Maddux was the winning pitcher giving up two runs off three hits while fanning six and walking four.

Courtney Acosta hit 2 for 4 this game while Maricela Holguin Torres, Luz Campas, Elizabeth Aguilar and Victoria Sandoval all were 1 for3. Aileen Larez, Jessica Quinonez, Abigail Nieblas each were 1 for 4.

On April 4 the Lady Bulldogs JV’s downed Willcox’s JV’s 7-6.

Samantha Gonzalez was the winning pitcher giving up four hits while fanning seven and walking four.

Jasmine Rojas hit 2 for 4 for Douglas with an inside the park home run; Acosta and Quinonez each hit 2 for 4; Aguilar was 1 for 3; Larez 1 for 4 and Sandoval 1 for 4 with a double.
