Bulldogs fourth at Bisbee Invitational By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch The Douglas Bulldogs finished fourth out of 10 teams at the Bisbee Invitational Saturday. Sahuarita came in first with 141 points, Benson was second, Safford third and Douglas fourth with 77.5 points. Alphonso Mejia secured his spot at the state meet in the 100 meters with a state qualifying time of 11.1 seconds which gave him third place Saturday. He came back and won the 300 intermediate hurdles with a time of 40.6 seconds. In the 110-meter high hurdles Rafael Carrillo, Ernesto Moreno and Ulyssis Villalobos finished sixth, seventh and eighth posting times of 19.3 seconds, 19.6 and 20.3. In the triple jump Rodrigo Martinez finished sixth with a jump of 36’9”; Luis Padilla was seventh with a jump of 35’8” and Mark Romero eighth with a 34’9”. Martinez finished eighth in the 800-meters with a time of 2:21. Douglas’ 4x800 relay team of Stewart Hernandez, Gustavo Melendez, Ricky Larez and Martinez finished third with a time of 9:32. Larez was third and Melendez seventh in the 1600 finishing with times of 5:06 and 5:23. Larez and Melendez were third and seventh as well in the 3200 finishing with times of 11:21 and 11:44. Brandon Moreno finished eighth in the 400 with a time of 56.8 seconds; Luis Padilla was fifth in the high jump with a jump of five feet. The Bulldogs relay team of Mejia, Dillon Guerrero and Brandon and Jose Moreno won the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.5 seconds and then came back to win the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:40. Douglas’ Coach Ron Ellsworth said all in all it was a good meet and he was happy with the effort of his two winning relay teams. The coach said Mejia also had a good meet. The Bulldogs are in Tucson today running against Amphi.
