Lady netters extend win streak to nine

The Douglas Lady Bulldog tennis team closed out the home portion of their schedule last week beating Bisbee 9-0 at the DHS tennis courts while improving to 11-1 on the season.

Bisbee came to Douglas with just four tennis players and as a result forfeited the five and six singles matches as well as the No. 3 doubles.

Prior to the match the team honored seniors Kim Cormier, Tanya Nunez, Argentina Morales and Valeria Cordova. All four of the girls are four year varsity lettermen.

In singles play Kim Cormier won 8-0 at No. 1 singles.

Tanya Nunez was an 8-1 winner at No. 2 singles and Argentina Morales, playing at No. 3 singles, posted an 8-2 win.

Valeria Cordova won 8-3 at No. 4 singles.

In doubles play Erika Romero and Marissa Aguirre were 8-3 winners while Emily Owen and Fernanda Quiroz cruised to an 8-2 win.

The DHS tennis team was at Valley Union last night and will be in Bisbee today wrapping up the regular season.

The first round of the individual state tournament competition begins Friday in Phoenix for No.1 singles player Kim Cormier and No.1 doubles team of Tanya Nunez and Argentina Morales.

Douglas’ coach Ken Cormier said it appears that the Lady Bulldogs will host a first round state tournament team match on Wednesday, April 25th at 3 p.m.

On Thursday, April 12, the Lady Bulldogs shutout St. David 9-0 in St. David.

Cormier and Nunez were each 8-3 winners; Morales won her match 8-1; Cordova was an 8-2 winner: Romero an 8-1 winner and Aguirre won her match 8-0.

In doubles play Comier and Nunez were 8-4 winners. Morales and Cordova 8-1 winners and Romero and Aguirre won their match 8-1.

In JV play Owen and Fernanda Quiroz won 8-0 while Andrea Quiroz and Sienna Martinez won 8-0.

On April 10 the Lady Bulldogs blanked Benson 9-0 in Benson.

Cormier and Nunez each won their singles matches by identical scores of 8-4; Morales was an 8-2 winner; Cordova won her match 8-4, Romero was an 8-2 winner and Aguirre shutout her opponent 8-0.

In doubles play Nunez and Morales won 8-0; Cordova and Romero were 8-2 winners and Aguirre and Fernanda Quiroz won their match 8-0.

In JV play Owen was an 8-4 winner.
