Bulldogs complete sweep over Bisbee By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch The Douglas Bulldogs completed a season sweep over their rivals the Bisbee Pumas last week as senior Roy Aguirre hurled a three hit shutout at the Pumas sparking the Dogs to a 11-0 win at Warren Ballpark in old Bisbee. Nine days prior fellow senior pitcher Xavier Altamirano fired a no-hitter at the Pumas in a 11-1 win. Despite not being on the mound this game Altamirano started things off for Douglas when he belted a two run home run to left field giving the Bulldogs a early 2-0 lead. RBI doubles by Diego Resendiz and Aguirre in the top half of the third increased Douglas’ lead to 5-0. The Bulldogs piled on six more runs off five hits in the fourth increasing their lead to 11-0. Aguirre ended up with the win fanning five while failing to allow a walk. Resendiz hit 2 for 2 with two doubles while Rufino Salinas was 2 for 3, Grant Watkins was 1 for 2, Aguirre 1 for 3, Luis Barrios 1 for 3, Jason Sanez 1 for 4, Jorge Escalante 1 for 1, Altamirano 1 for 1 and Fernando Rojas 1 for 1. After the win Douglas’ Coach Gilbert Rojas said Aguirre looked good Thursday night and this was one of his better outings this season. “It was good way to end the week,” he said. The Bulldogs began the week losing to Cienega 4-0 in Vail. Altamirano started the game on the mound for Douglas and went the distance giving up four runs off five hits while fanning six and walking three. This game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Cienega scored four runs on a couple of Douglas errors. Kirt Cormier hit 2 for 3 this game while Ozzy Moreno and Roberto Velasquez each were 1 for 3 and Watkins 1 for 4. On April 4 the Bulldogs beat Willcox 11-4 at Copper King Stadium. Willcox jumped out to a 2-0 lead when the Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the second tying the game at 2-2. The Bulldogs broke the tie in the third to go up 5-2. Willcox scored a run in the fourth to pull within two only to have Douglas score five more runs in the fourth increasing its lead to 10-3. Watkins was the winning pitcher this game giving up four runs off six hits while fanning five and walking two. Barrios hit 2 for 4, Resendiz 2 for 2, Christian Dorame and Altamirano each were 1 for 2. Escalante and Aguirre each hit 1 for 3. The Bulldogs are at Empire on Friday. Junior varsity The Douglas JV’s continue to remain unbeaten at 13-0. On April 5 the young Bulldogs beat Bisbee 15-6 in Bisbee.

Lomeli and Ortega each were 1 for 1 and David Hurtado and Leo Montano each were 1 for 2 with Hurtado having a double. On April 3 the Bulldogs downed Cienega 6-1. Ortega went six innings on the hill giving up no runs off two hits while fanning three and picking up the win. Valenzuela threw one inning in relief giving up one run off one hit. Mark Gonzalez hit 3 for 4 this game, Hugo Valenzuela was 2 for 4, Valenzuela was 2 for 2 with an RBI. Chris Cruz hit 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI’s. Michael Arzate and Fernando Chacon each were 1 for 1. Hector Sepuvelda 1 for 2 and Leigh 1 for 4. On March 29 the Douglas junior varsity beat Empire’s junior varsity 23-1. Leo Montano hit 3 for 4 and had three RBI’s this game. Ortega came on in relief giving up no runs off one hit in five and a third innings before yielding way to Nick Leigh who threw one inning and gave up no runs off no hits.
