“They award so many points for each win, so it was something all the girls felt part off,” Douglas’ tennis coach Ken Cormier said.

Douglas’ No.1 doubles team of Argentina Morales and Valeria Cordova beat a team from Pima 10-2 in the second round (had a 1st round bye), then lost to the eventual champions Duncan team 10-6, which was their toughest match of the tournament.

The No. 2 doubles team of Erika Romero and Marissa Aguirre had a great tournament, the coach said. They won their round match over Pima 10-2 then defeated the second seed St. David team 10-8; then defeated Duncan 10-3, before losing to Thatcher 10-4 in the semi-finals.

In singles competition, Tanya Nunez won her first match over a Pima opponent 10-0 then defeated her opponent from St. David 10-2 before losing to the eventual winner from Miami 10-2.

Kim Cormier defeated her first round opponent from Morenci 10-0 (first round bye), then won her second match 10-0 over her opponent from Benson, in the semi-finals she defeated her Silver City challenger 7-5, 6-4. In the finals she lost to Kendra Holliday of Miami 6-0, 6-1.

“It was the first tournament championship won by Douglas in six years,” the coach said “It was a long but fun day, and a great way to prepare for the upcoming state tournament.”
