Bulldogs headed back to state

For the fifth straight year the Douglas Bulldogs are headed back to the state playoffs.


The Bulldogs, 21-7 overall, 15-3 in region play, hosted Gila Ridge of Yuma last night at Douglas High School. The results are posted on line.

Thirteenth seed Gila Ridge edged 20th seed Seton Catholic 1-0 Saturday in first round play in Yuma.

The winner of last nights game will face the winner of the Sahuaro vs. Liberty game Thursday in Phoenix.

The Bulldogs closed out the regular season April 24 shutting out the Benson Bobcats 12-0 in Benson.

Grant Watkins, Xavier Altamirano and Roy Aguirre each threw in the game.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the first taking a 4-0 lead. A three run second pushed that lead to 7-0. Douglas added another run in the third and four more in the sixth.

Watkins hit 2 for 2 this game. Rufino Salinas and Alex Montano each were 1 for 2, Christian Dorame 1 for 3, Jason Sanez 2 for 5, Altamirano 3 for 4 and Jorge Escalante 1 for 1.
