Lady Bulldogs fourth at Safford meet

The Douglas Lady Bulldogs finished fourth out of 16 teams at the Safford Invitational April 20.


Host Safford won the meet finishing with 155.5 points. Payson was second with 89, St. Johns third with 70 followed by Douglas with 62 and Coolidge with 52.

Barbara Jordan finished fourth in the 200 with a medaling time of 27.41 seconds and fifth in the 100-meters with a 13.25.

Kayla Fields finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.13 and she medaled in the 300-meter low hurdles with a third place time which was not available. Melissa Rodriguez placed seventh with a 50.94.

Grecia Castillo won the triple jump with a jump of 33’5” and she was fifth in the long jump with a jump of 15’6”.

Emily Castillo threw the discus 89’6” giving her fifth place.

Danitza Ozuna was seventh in the shot put with a throw of 26’10”.

Douglas’ 4x100 relay team of Zenaida Parra, Jordan, Rodriquez and Fields came in first with a time seconds.

The 4x400 relay team of Rodriquez, Jordan, Marilyn Grijalva and Fields finished third with a time of 4:19.

Douglas 4x800 team of Grijalva, Angelica Trejo, Karla Loreto and Laura Blair also placed third with a time of 11:20.

“It was a hot day in Safford which will help our athletes get use to the heat for state,” Douglas’ Coach Donna Savill said. “We have one more meet in Benson on May 3 for athletes to try to move up on the state meet list.”

Coach Savill provided the Douglas Dispatch with a list of where her athletes rank amongst the top 24 for state.

4x100 relay 52.19 4th in state (Zenaida Parra, Barbara Jordan, Melissa Rodriquez, Kayla Fields).

4x400 relay 4:19.10 4th in state (Marilyn Grijalva, Barbara Jordan, Melissa Rodriquez, Kayla Fields).

4x800 relay 11:04 12th in state (Marilyn Grijalva, Karla Loreto, Angelica Trejo, Laura Blair).

Barbara Jordan, 100M 13.25 15th in state, 200M 27.41 16th in state.

Kayla Fields, 100HH 18.13 27th in state, 300LH 48.66 3rd in state.

Melissa Rodriquez, 300LH 50.94 16th in state.

Grecia Castillo, Long Jump 15’9 8th in state, Triple Jump 33’5 8th in state.

Emily Castillo Disc 89’6 25th in state.
