A former Douglas Bulldog, his wife and a friend are in the process of putting together a football camp for linemen which will be called the Douglas Lineman Football Camp.

The camp will run from 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. July 9-20 at the north field at Airport Park. It will be open to kids ages 8-18 and the cost is $10 per kid. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and a mouth piece.
Ortega said this is a non-contact camp and will consist of teaching the basics of hand and footwork plus conditioning. There will be no helmets or pads used during this event.
Ortega, who played for Douglas’ current football coach Dick Keith when he was an athlete, continues to support the team. He says after watching the line play the last several years he came up with the idea of the camp.
Ortega says he has the support of the DHS coaches as well as the Douglas Charger organization.
“This is something I wish we had when I was playing,” he said. “We are relatively smaller when it comes to playing against the Phoenix schools. … I’m hoping this will give our kids somewhat of an edge. … I just want to help the kids.”
Michelle said she’s hoping this camp will help the younger kids learn what’s needed so when they reach the high school level they have a better understanding of what their role is on the line.
“We’re also hoping this will help the coaches as well,” she said.
Oscar is in the process of lining up volunteers for the camp and encourages anyone with lineman experience wanting to contribute to contact him.
“We want this to be a very positive experience,” he said.
Ortega says he has 40 spots available.
The first of four registrations will take place this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Airport Park.
Another registration will take place May 26 followed by two more June 2 and 9.
Ortega is also looking for contributions in the way of money or footballs or cones.
