Cake Auction brings is $23,300

With over 170 cakes auctioned and with the help of over 85 volunteers, the Douglas Association for Retarded Citizens was able to raise $23,300 through the 49th Annual Mother’s Day Cake Auction, celebrated at the Gadsden Hotel’s Lobby on Sunday, May 13.

With this amount, the 2012 auction surpasses last year’s, which raised $20,163 and had 154 cakes for sale. This year’s highest bid also surpasses the one from last year, being the 2012 highest bid made by Wells Fargo Bank, which paid $480 for a Chocolate and Strawberry Cake made by Vicky Merrit. Merrit presented another 10 home-made cakes for the auction.

DARC’s Executive Director Gary Clark said that all the money raised will be used to match both Federal and State grants available for them to continue their operations. It is expected that by combining Federal State and the funds raised with the auction the total amount would go up to $116,500 this year.

Clark expressed his gratitude towards all the people and businesses that keep making this event one of the biggest and most important fundraisers for the association.

“I would like to thank the entire citizens of Douglas, and definitively the businesses in this town,” Clark said. “It is like a miracle; but one good thing about this cake auction is that we never give anything by granted. At the end of every cake auction we start thinking about the next one and when the right time comes out we start moving thing up to make this dream happen.”

He also recognized that every person is important to them, since the person that sales a single ticket to the person that makes more cakes than anyone; everybody contribute in their own way to help in the best possible way. He acknowledges that it is because of this type of people is that the Cake Auction has been a huge success throughout all this years.

    " The word retarded sounds prejudice. You should use Mentally disabled citizens instead. Its a thought because I am in College and I know its prejudice. "
