The Douglas Girls Softball League closed out the first half of league play Friday with an impressive showdown between two undefeated teams in the juniors division.
The Backdrop Photography Kryptonite, managed by Jessica Galaz, squared off against the Wess’ Cattle Company Keystones managed by Bobby Forest. Both teams were 7-0 going into the game.
What many thought would be a low scoring pitchers dual proved not to be the case as the Kryptonite handed the Keystone’s their first loss winning 14-2.
The Keystones scored both their runs in the top of the first taking a brief 2-0 lead.
The Kryptonite responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Backdrop closed out the game with a six run fourth.
Yessika "Keka" Galaz was the winning pitcher.
According to stats turned into the Dispatch by Coach Galaz, Anie Cisneros went 2 for 3, with a triple and a double with two RBIs for the Kryptonite. Vanessa Moreno was 2 for 4 with a triple and a single with two RBIs; Aileen Luna 2 for 4 with two singles, one RBI, a walk and a pop fly; Galaz was 1 for 4 with a triple with one RBI and two walks and one out at first; Andrea Cruz went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk with one RBI; Carla Romero Tapia went 1 for 2 with a single and a walk with one RBI; Janessa Salazar went 1 for 3 with a single with two RBIs; Yasmin Flores went 1 for 3 with a single with two RBIs and Angela Munoz, Marilyn Aceves, and Sofia Martinez all went 0 for 1.
“We are so very proud of all our girls,” Coach Galaz said. “They all played a big part in our victory against the Keystones.”
Stats for the Keystones was not available from league officials.
The Panthers, coached by Mary and Louie Laborin and Ken and Sandra Nelson were 3-2 in five games.
According to stats turned into the Dispatch by Coach Laborin, on April 27 the Panthers fell to the Keystones 7-1 as Vivika Pedroza hit 2 for 2 and Kiara Hernandez was 1 for 2.
On April 26 the Panthers shutout the Grissy’s Cats 9-0. Pedroza and Paola Magana each hit 3 for 4 this game while Hernandez was 2 for 3, Yasmine Torres was 1 for 1; Kendra Nelson 2 for 4; Carolina Curiel had two walks and Katrina Hartman three walks.
On April 19 the Panthers fell to the Cardinals 10-3.
Curiel was the losing pitcher.
Hernandez, Pedroza and Nelson each hit 2 for 3 this game. Curiel, Hartman each were 1 for 3 and Magana 1 for 1.
On April 17 the Panthers mercy ruled the Dynamite 15-2.
Pedroza was the winning pitcher this game. She also hit 3 for 4. Nelson was 2 for 3, Yasmine Torres was also 2 for 3 as was Magana.
The Panthers began the season beating the Lady Titans 8-1 April 12.
Curiel was the winning pitcher this game. Pedroza hit 2 for 4, Nelson was 2 for 3, Torres and Alejandra Sepulveda each were 1 for 2, Curiel was 1 for 3 and Hernandez 1 for 4.
No other stats were available from DGSL officials.
Softball play continues this week at the 15th Street Park.
