City requests residents to conserve water

Published/Last Modified on Friday, May 25, 2012 4:05 PM MDT

The City of Douglas would like to advise all Douglas residents of the immediate need for water conservation due to drought conditions and extreme fire danger.

As a result, the City respectfully request residents conserve water by checking faucets, pipes, and toilets for leaks and only watering lawns and gardens between 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Code Enforcement will be vigilant to ensure proper water usage and may advise on the importance of effective water usage if need be.

All residents are also advised to use caution when using outdoor grills as high winds and dry conditions have increased fire danger in our area. Due to these drought conditions no burn permits will be issued until the current conditions improve.

Also, be advised that due to the current low water level conditions and dry weather conditions, the City of Douglas will not allow the fireworks display for the Douglas High School 2012 Graduation ceremony.

We apologize for any inconvenience and disappointment that this may cause. The City and the Fire Department appreciate the community’s understanding with DFD helping to keep the children and community safe.

Please contact DFD at 417-7371 for any questions and or concerns or the City of Douglas at 417-7300.

Important aspects of drought conditions and water conservation.

1. Low water levels.

2. High fire danger

3. High winds a very big factor in fire spread

4. Fires in the Palominas and Sierra Vista areas are of a great concern to us due to us having the same dry vegetation and wind issues.

5. Consumer fireworks have been restricted in Sierra Vista this restriction is pending for Douglas

6. The County Board of Supervisors will be voting on open burning and other fire restrictions next week.

7. The Arizona State Forestry Division has issues fire, smoking and fireworks restrictions for all State owned land and managed land in Southeastern AZ. These restrictions have been in place since May 7, of this year and will continue until further notice.

8. We have to think about any wild fires starting up in our area as water from our resources may also have to be used.

9. Holiday weekend and the rest of the summer in upon us and we want to make sure that all residents using BBQ grills will use common sense when using mesquite and or charcoal burning BBQ’s.

10. Do not use grills during windy situations.

11. Make sure all combustibles are stored in metal cabinets or away from all other heat sources.

12. Keep all surrounding areas clean of dried weeds, other vegetation and other debris.

13. Wet down areas around grilling areas prior to turning on The BBQ grills.

14. Make sure you also protect your neighbor’s property as fire embers can fly onto adjacent properties and catch dry vegetation and or combustibles on fire.

15. Please dial 911 in the event that you see light or dark smoke in any areas around our community as no burning permits will be permitted under current weather conditions. Permits may be issued when conditions improve and dialing 911 as soon as possible may also help us avoid a major fire situation by responding quickly and mitigating the danger and hazard before it’s too late.

Do you know why the fire department was spraying those kids? well FYI these students were part of the top schools that raised money for MDA(Muscular Dystrophy Association) through the fill the boot fundraiser. "

" Front page of dispatch has article about the concerns the city and fire department have about conserving water. Open the paper and you have a picture of the fire department wasting many gallons of water spraying kids, with the concerned chief happily watching this waste happen. Practice what you preach! No matter how someone may try to spin this the fire dept. is wasting water in a time when we can't afford to waste it. "

" As usual, it's easier for the city to point the finger or blame someone else for their problems. City Hall doesn't get watered before 7am. Neither does any other park/cemetary in the city. Here's a good one. Why does the city waste water, by watering the parks when it is raining? Don't use water timers as an excuse. City vehicles are not cleaned prior to 7am. Who's going to monitor them? Before you police us taxpayer's, police yourself first. "

" Why does Douglas have to conserve and places like Phoenix have lakes, green lawns, lush yards, swimming pools? And we have nothing but a few measly places of green! Something is wrong with this picture. Then you have all the Maricopa people come own and make fun or our city when "they" are the ones that are abusing water! Let those big cities conserve for once. "
