The Douglas American Legion held its annual ceremony Monday at Calvary Cemetery honoring those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Current Douglas Mayor Dr. Mike Gomez read a poem called “Daddy’s Poem” which is about a young girl who went to school without her dad for a presentation and told everyone how he died fighting for our country and even though he is not with her in person when she closes her eyes she can see him.
U.S. Army Reserve Retired Major Brian Bickel was the guest speaker.
“We are gathered here on Memorial Day 2012 to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” he said. “Remembering our fallen once year must not be enough.”
Bickell said those families who have suffered that sacrifice remember it every day.
“We continue to lose more American hero’s every day,” he said.
Bickell added there are 58,267 names listed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall; nine of those names are Douglas residents.
“To those who survived the war and to the families of those who did not we see the faces and the pain that these numbers created,” he said. “Memorial Day is not about picnics or parades … Memorial Day is really about remembering those who made that way of life possible.”
The event was followed by a get-together at the American Legion.
