With the intention of raising money for the Children’s Miracle Network, Wal-Mart Supercenter in Douglas held a Jail-a-thon on Friday, May 18 starting at 10 a.m. and finishing several hours later.

The Jail-a-thon consisted of having a screen tent with a zipper and gathered groups of five people at a time. ‘Arrested people’ had to call their contacts to help them get out of jail by raising $100 each in order to be released.

Store Manager Sergio Gonzalez said that the activity is part of a series of events the store does periodically in order to be able to raise money for the organization, which Wal-Mart is committed to help every year.

“This is a foundation that Wal-Mart raises money for and we have done for a long time now,” Gonzalez said. “In fact, our market region here in southern Arizona is leading all of the United States as far as raising money for this organization.”

Gonzalez also said that all the money raised at the Douglas’ store goes to the Tucson Medical Center, and it serves not only the Tucson community but also kids from the area that need to be treated there.

Wal-Mart will be doing several fundraisers from May to June at the store to help the foundation. The next event will be a Mini-Carnival offered outside of the store during the weekend of May 25.

At the mini-carnival people will enjoy snow-cones, hot dogs, games, and will be able to get prizes as well.

All the profits raised from this event will also go to the foundation.
