More events at the Douglas Mercado

Dear Editor:

I visited the Douglas Mercado at Castro Park on 10th Street on Sunday, May 20th. It was filled with many people who turned out to join in the exciting activities. There were plenty of things of to do, such as shopping for locally grown produce, bouncing in a jumping castle, watching Zumba dancers, listening to live music, or learning about the importance of staying and eating healthy.

There were new vendors at the Mercado. Garret was selling Cajun style sandwiches, Don and Linda offered gently reused items, and Lee and Lisa brought fresh eggs.

The regular vendors had fresh produce, local honey products, homemade jewelry, live plants and birds and good tasting food.

Edwin had oregano, cabbage and tomatoes. Sister Mary and Cathy were selling fresh basil, snow peas, leeks, and red onions. James had many honey, garlic, and pistachios.

The jewelry vendors, Inez and Levonne sold earrings, bracelets, necklaces and jewelry boxes. I learned that Levonne will be coming out with chained jewelry soon.

Barbara had a variety of birds and live plants.

The regular food vendors included Bob and Keoki. Bob sold BBQ pull pork sandwiches, with chips, soda and water, Keoki sold El Mitote’s healthy shakes and Mexican fruit salads. Last but not least, regular dessert vendor Barbara G. sold home made scones, cookies, nut bars, and candies.

The Douglas Mercado had plenty more people and vendors than I have seen this season. Everyone had tons of fun! I encourage more families to come and enjoy this experience with me this coming Sunday.

Thank you for reading, and come to the Douglas Mercado!

Sincerely:

Karen Cabarga
