Los Angeles won all three games from Douglas winning 14-4 and 8-4 on Saturday. On Sunday Douglas was down 8-5 going into the bottom of the eighth when the local Vets rallied to tie the game at 8. In the top of the ninth the Broncos tacked on six more runs to win 14-8.
It has become a tradition each year that when the group comes to Douglas they hand out several scholarships to each of the current DHS graduates.
Last year AJ Acosta and Tony Young were the recipients. This year Christian Dorame, Jorge Escalante, Alison Ortega, Mishell Quinonez and Carley Acosta were the honorees. Xavier Altamirano, who was not at the event, was awarded a scholarship from the Brown family.
The games were bitter sweet for many. On Sunday those at the event were slowly informed that longtime participant Hector Leon has lost his beloved wife Gloria the day before to cancer. Leon showed courage as he pitched Sunday with a heavy heart.
Also it was noted that longtime organizers Efrain Brown and Hector Salinas are stepping away after 42 years and turning over the organizing of the event to Richard Acosta and Jesus Hughes.
Brown said he will still be involved with the games just now as regularly as he was.
“It’s been fun,” he said after Sunday’s finale. “We’ve given away a lot of scholarships over the years.”
The Douglas Vets will now head to Los Angeles Labor Day weekend for a rematch with the Broncos which has been the custom.
