U.S. Flag receives honors

The Elks Lodge BPOE 955 in coordination with the American Legion Post 11, the American Legion Riders and the Cub Scouts as special guests honored the U.S. Flag Day on June 16 at Castro Park.

Master of ceremonies Elks Lodge Flag Chairman Richard Ross said that the purpose of the ceremony was to honor the country’s flag, to celebrate the anniversary of its birth, and to recall the achievements attained beneath its folds.

After the Douglas Fire Department Honor Guard posted the Colors, Exalted Ruler PER Andrea Arnejo presented the history of the flag for the better understanding of the meaning of the flag. A presentation of each one of the U.S. Flags was made by the American Legion Riders and the Cub Scouts while Arnejo explained the significance of each flag.

“Heraldry is as old as the human race. The carrying of banners has been a custom among all peoples in all ages,” Arnejo said. “These banners usually contain some concept of life or government of those who fashion them. The evolution of the American Flag marks the progression of the government of the American People.”

Ross said that the resurgence of the patriotism since September 11, 2001 has rekindled respect for the flag.

“Today, we see the Star Spangled Banner wherever we turn, on homes, businesses, automobiles, and billboards,” he said. “Such displays stimulate our love for our Nation and for what it stands; they remind us the sacrifices being made by the men and women of our Armed Forces around the world.”

He remarked that the greatest significance of the Flag, however, lies in the influence it has in the hearts and minds of millions of people. It has served as a beacon for millions of poor and oppressed refugees abroad and stands as a promise that the under-privileged will not be forgotten.

    " I attended the ceremony and it was a great time. It was sad however that more of the public did not attend, including the city council and Mayor. I hope that next year there will be a better turn out. I was speaking with friend trying to come up with ideas to get people that would want to watch. If there are any ideas maybe we can talk to whom ever puts the event on. "
