“Now I can say ‘I am the Mayor’,” was the first phrase of Danny Ortega after taking his Oath of Office as the official Mayor of Douglas at the City of Douglas Regular Meeting, held on June 13 at City Hall.

“I think that with the team we have up here we are going to accomplish important and promising things in the next coming years,” Ortega said. He thanked his wife and family for their endless support and also thanked the Douglas City’s staff and Council for the great support they are already showing to him.

Re-elected Councilmembers Margaret Morales and Ben LaForge and newly elected Councilman Luis Greer also took their Oath of Office to continue their tenancies for Wards 1, 3 and 5 respectively. Justice of the Peace Alma Vildosola conducted the oath.

At the beginning of the meeting former Mayor Michael Gomez expressed his gratitude to other mayors from southeastern Arizona for always supporting him during his tenancy.

“I can tell you ‘there might never be a Mayor with such support,” Gomez said. “I believe that with all this help we have brought to Douglas not only good community affairs but state and national affairs and I know that the new administration is going to keep up the hard work for the Port of Entry, which is very close to being funded. Other than that I am ready to go out and associate with my friends.”

At the same meeting, Douglas’ staff said farewell to former Councilmember for Ward 5 Ivan Huish who ended his tenure this month. City Clerk Brenda Aguilar delivered a Certificate of Appreciation recognizing Huish for his leadership and devoted service through all eight-years he served as Councilmember.

The first agenda item approved by the new Council was the expenditures for the month of May and the minutes of the last meeting.

Mayor and Council also approved the motion to table indefinitely the agenda items related to the establishment of a Youth City Council and the consideration to change the regular council meeting from the second Wednesday to the Second Tuesday of every month.

The next regular meeting is scheduled to be held on July 11 at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

" My opinion is that each homeowner needs to step up and clean and repair their property and not wait for someone else to do it. And STOP parking your cars on the front yards! This is not L. A.! Maybe if the residents become more responsible this community would become cleaner and more presentable. "

" Now that we have a new mayor and a few new council members...They need to walk or drive around Douglas and see how DIRTY their town really is...Those council members need to walk their ward and approach those diry front yards and homes that are in need of a good cleaning...The city use to send out a letter to clean your alley or you would be fined...What about the front of your house? if every man or woman took pride in their wards as they do about half the crap that goes on at their meetings.Douglas would be beautiful!! Councilmen should be fined if their wards are dirty and disgusting they need to start with their ward and spend a saturday or two helping their ward get cleaned. Our new mayor needs to enforce this ...driving into Douglas is a eyesore..just drive down 10 street from G ave. to ariport road and take a really good look at the front yards of the homes.. those homes back in the days took pride because they lived on 10 street..mayor of our town and council members take pride in the town you are working for and FIRST START BY CLEANING IT UP "

" My question to Mayor and Councilmembers who voted for the incease to the City Clerk. Did you even think how this was going to impact other City employees. Maybe the 15,000 could have been divided among the employees who are waiting until Jan. 2013 for the promised 2%, and lease make it 2.5%? But then again, who keeps the city running,,, its your Street workers, covering holes, police dept. patroling the town, mechanics repairing cars, firmen fighting fires, can't forget all those who recieve all those complaints by phones. But remember "Just me and my opion". "

" Mayor Ortega has big shoes to fill. Time will tell, but he needs to be careful who he listens to. Right now is the honeymoon, lets see what happens next year at this time when we have had to pay for all these budget items. Lets see what happens when he gets thrown into the fire, because you can't please everyone. "

" Someone please name one thing the former mayor did that was positive for Douglas! I seriously doubt anything can be listed. Only political grandstanding and talk came from his camp! And his supposed support was just delusional imagery. Just deal with the facts of his actions from the past years! "

" Well I for one am glad to see a man of character in the Mayor's office and not an unethical political hack who only wanted the spotlight. Congrats Danny!

And congrats to the other members of the Council who had to weather the storm from the lunatic fringe and came out winners!

Douglas is behind you so lets get down to work. "

    " Reply to Bulldog.
Speak for yourself about Douglas not feeling welcomed. Talk to people other than your little yes, yes puppets. Instead of bashing, why don't you do something Positive? Former Mayor Gomez was and is a asset to the city of Douglas, he promotes his love of Douglas, not the NEGATIVE, HATEFULNESS, UNTRUTH ,and mostly EVIL. Why don't you find out the facts, before you start HOWLING? "

He accomplished nothing while he and his clown crew cost the taxpayers lots of $$$. And the taxpayers will still pay for that recall because those jerks won't finish filing the papers as required by law. And that POS losing candidate and his ghostwriter are to blame also for divisions in this town because they did whatever the King told them to do. Lets hope all the minions fade away so the real leaders can get to work!! "
