DGSL begins postseason play

The Douglas Girls Softball League (DGSL) began post season Saturday with a tournament that began early Saturday morning and finished past 10 p.m. that night.

Games will continue throughout the week this week ending July 2 with three championship games for the mini’s, minors and juniors divisions.

The day began with the Grissy’s Cats defeating the Long Realty Dynamite 15-4. Stats from this game were unavailable.

Later that morning the Western Cattle Company Keystones beat the Lady Titans 11-1.

Game three of the juniors division pitted the Estrella Imaging She-Devils taking on the Ortega’s Cardinals. The She-Devils won this game 5-0. The winning pitcher was Danielle Estrella fanning 13. The losing pitcher was Jackie Hurtado fanning five. For the She-Devils Estrella hit 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs. Crystal Munoz, Evelyn Maytorena and Debraca Acedo were all 1 for 2. For the Cardinals Emeri Melendez hit 1 for 2.

The final game of the night had the Panthers falling to the Da Royal Bombers 4-2. Da Royal Bombers were playing with just eight players and had an automatic out each time the ninth batter came up. The winning pitcher was Yessica Vasquez who fanned five. The losing pitcher Caroline Curiel who fanned six.

For Da Royal Bombers Johanna Paramo and Daniella Contreras were 1 for 2 from the plate. Cristana Corrales and Sarai Garcia were also 1 for 2 each with 1 RBI. For the Panthers Kiara Hernandez, Vivika Pedroza and Curiel were 1 for 2. Genesis Galaz was 1 for 1.

The regular season champion Backdrop Photography Kryptonites had a first round bye and played Grissy’s this past Monday.

In minors play Saturday three games were played.

Game one had the Apson Trucking Pistols falling to D-Backers 9-7. The winning pitcher was Yanexel Espinosa with five strikeouts. The losing pitcher was Victoria Rojas with six strikeouts. For the D-Backers Chantal Otero had a triple with an RBI, Yanexel Espinosa and Damaris Miranda were 2 for 3.

Game two had the Firebugs vs JJ’s Monkeys. JJ’s Monkeys forfeited due to lack of players, advancing the Firebugs in the winners bracket to their first game on Monday at 5:30. JJ’s Monkeys will play Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Game 3 had the Blue Angels thumping the Bad News Bears 24-4. The winning pitcher was Valerie Moreno with seven strikeouts. Blanca Padilla took the loss fanning two. For the Blue Angels, Gigi was 2 for 4 with a triple her first at bat with 1 RBI, Yunise Murguia was 1 for 4, Makenzie Duarte was 4 for 4, with a double and an inside the park grand slam and seven RBIs, Viridiana Ramon was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Valerie Moreno was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Fernanda Luna was 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI, Aneliz Gomez was 1 for 3 with an RBI. For the Bad News Bears “Lani” was 1 for 3, Nailea Buelna, Blanca Padilla, and “Jay” were 1 for 2, each with RBI’s, Reese Necas was 1 for 2 with a double.

The Panthers finished the year 8-8 finishing fourth in the nine team division.

On June 18 the Panthers fell 15-8 to the She Devils.

Curiel was the losing pitcher. Hernandez, Pedroza and Nelson each were 0-1 with two walks this game. Curiel was 1-3; R. Hernandez and Galaz each had a walk.

On June 20 the Panthers beat the Cardinals 6-1. Curiel was the winning pitcher.

Hernandez, Pedroza and Nelson each hit 2 for 3. K. Hartman was 1-2 with a double and Y. Torres had a single.

On June 21 the Panthers closed out the regular season falling 6-3 to Da Royal Bombers.

Pedroza was the losing pitcher this game. Curiel, Hartman and Torres each hit 2 for 3 this game with Torres having a double. Pedroza and Nelson each were 1 for 3.

On June 18 the Backdrop Kryptonite and the Keystones faced off against each other. Backdrop was 15-0 at this point while the Keystones were 14-1, their lone loss coming to Backdrop earlier in the season. Backdrop had a 6-1 lead this game but errors and runners left on base late in the game allowed the Keystones to come back and hand the Kryptonites their first loss with a 9-8 win.

Yessica "Keka" Galaz and Aileen Luna each pitched for Backdrop this game. Vanessa Moreno went 3 for 3 for the Kryptonites with two doubles, a triple and three RBI’s; Andrea Cruz was 3 for 3 with two doubles and a single; Luna was 2 for 3 with a double, a single and an RBI; Yasmine Flores hit 1 for 3, Anie Cisneros and Carla Tapia each were 1 for 2 and Angela Munoz was 1 for 1.

The Kryptonites still won the regular season crown and landed the No. 1 seed in the tournament based on the fact they beat the Keystones by 12 in the earlier meeting.
