Cox wins state essay contest

Siboney Cox of Douglas was recently announced as the state winner for her age group of the American Legion Auxiliary Americanism Essay Contest.

The event was put on by the American Legion Auxiliary and Fred Hilburn Unit 11 of Douglas.

Karen Smith of the American Legion in Douglas went to the various schools around town encouraging students to take part in the essay contest. Smith then took those entries and submitted them to the state level.

Cox, the daughter of Sammy and Denise Cox of Douglas and a seventh grade student at Huber Junior High, wrote on the topic “How can I promote Patriotism in my Community.”

She was announced as the winner for her class at the Department Convention in Carefree, AZ June 21-24.

Her essay is now being forwarded to the National level where it will be judged against other state winners.

Also at the Department Convention, Aaliyah Trujillo, daughter of Gene and Lupe Trujillo was awarded a plaque for Junior Miss Poppy.

Smith was awarded recognition for her work in Education for the Auxiliary. Her certificate of appreciation was signed by the National Commander of the American Legion Fang Wong.

The local Fred Hilburn Unit 11 won several awards for their work in the Community, Schools, Music, Children & Youth and Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation.

Those attending the convention were: Iliana Solis, Jacque Solis, Jennie Molina-Department Junior Activities Chairman, Karen Smith-Department Vice President, Penny Maklary-Parliamentarian and Past Western Division National Vice President, Julius (Mac) Maklary.

Past Department Commander and Past National Executive Committeeman was also in attendance.

Several Junior members of the Unit were in attendance. They were: Reyna Hernandez, Ariana Hernandez, Aixa Own, Ixsel Owen, Mickey Vaupel, Jessica Vaupel, Johanna Jimenez and Kelly Gutierrez. Parents chaperoning were Diana Vaupel and Kathy Owen.
