All-Star play begins

District 8 All-Star play began last week and three different locations within the district.

In Sierra Vista the Douglas 9-10 all-stars coached by Johnny Pedrego, beat San Pedro this past Saturday 17-4.

Kevin Saldate was the winning pitcher. Jose Ruiz and Konnor Cormier also threw in the game.

Douglas scored 17 runs off 12 hits. Saldate hit 2 for 4, Orlando Grijlava was 3 for 4, Damian Robles was 2 for 2, Fabian Meraz and Jose Ruiz were each 2 for 3 and Carlos Grijalva was 1 for 1.

Douglas faced Rio Rico this past Monday in a winners bracket game.

In Bisbee the Douglas juniors beat host Bisbee 14-4 in game one.

Andres Robles was the winning pitcher. Jacob Ortega was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI’s this game. Jerry Grijalva was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and Sean Hahn was 1 for 2.

On Saturday Douglas faced Nogales. Down 6-4 at the end of three innings the game was suspended to Sunday when heavy rains moved into the area and muddied the field.

On Sunday Douglas looked like a totally different ball club. Nogales resumed the game with a four run rally in the top of the fourth increasing its lead to 10-4.

Douglas scored its final run in the bottom half of the fourth making the score 10-5.

In the top of the fifth the wheels fell off for Douglas who used at least four different pitchers. Nogales would score 16 runs this inning alone and rout the local all-stars 26-5.

Hahn, who started the game on Saturday, took the loss despite not throwing on Sunday.

Francisco Romo and Ortega each had hits in this game.

Douglas faced San Pedro this past Monday in an elimination game.

At the majors tournament in Nogales Douglas opened up with a 3-2 win over Sierra Vista National.

Javier Bojorquez started the game on the hill for Douglas and went three innings giving up no runs off no hits while fanning seven. Alonzo Tapia threw in relief.

Zaylan Aleman hit 1 for 2 this game. No other hitters were reported.

On Saturday Douglas was shutout 9-0 by Nogales. Stats from that game were also unavailable.

Douglas played on Tuesday in an elimination game.
