Officials for the Douglas Police Department are reporting a Douglas man is recovering in a Tucson hospital after being the victim of a stabbing July 3.

According to Sgt. Jose Duarte of the Douglas Police Dept. at approximately 9 p.m. Douglas Police Officers responded to Southeastern Arizona Medical Center in reference to a male subject in his early 20’s, who had sustained several stab wounds to his chest area.

Sgt. Duarte said officers questioned the victim, who is not being identified, and were informed that the stabbing had taken place in the 1500 block of B Avenue. Further investigation regarding the confrontation, indicated the suspect arrived at the residence looking for an unknown male subject. After seeing another male subject in the residential yard, the suspect pulled a knife and subsequently stabbed the victim multiple times.

Duarte said the victim then left the residence and sought help with his family, who transported him to the hospital for medical attention. The hospital staff subsequently informed the local authorities of the incident and that the victim had sustained life threatening injuries and would be transported to Tucson for urgent care.

Sgt. Duarte said as of July 4, the victim was in stable condition.

Douglas Police Officers and Officers from the Department of Public Safety Gang Unit also responded to the area and assisted Douglas Police Officers in conducting interviews.

Sgt. Duarte said it should be noted that this is an on-going investigation and gang affiliations may be part of what instigated the confrontation amongst the subjects.

Douglas Police Officers are looking for a person of interest in this case, but the name will not be released at this time, pending issuance of a warrant for his arrest.

" The reason why there are gangs in Douglas is because the people of Douglas allow them. You know who in your family, neighborhood and friends are doing wrong. But you refuse to do something about it. If you don't stand up now,our city will become a 3rd world toilet, just like our neighbors to the south (Mexico). Unless this is what the people of Douglas want for their city. I hope it is not to late to take back our city. "
