A song is silenced, the guitar strummed no more. Mario Cortez passed into his heavenly Father’s arms July 5, 2012. Mario was 57 years old.

He is survived by his beloved mother, Juanita Medina, father, Guadalupe Cortez, and brothers, Guadalupe, Tony and Fernando. Additional survivors are close companions, Roe and Roy Peters and their families. Mario was a member of many bands during his lifetime. When Mario was 14, he organized The Poor Boys. They played in local schools, American Legion, CYC, weddings, quinceañeras, baptisms, birthdays and Battle of the Bands.

His music took him to Tucson, Benson, Wilcox, Pirtleville, Douglas, Safford, and Bowie. He was a staunch supporter for the House of Hope, sold most of the tickets and collected door prizes for the Progressive Dinner. He enjoyed especially personally taking door prizes to the winners. He worked this event for 18 years playing and singing with the Arizona Dreamers, his last band. He loved community volunteerism, playing for La Solana, La Salette Catholic Mission, Grace Methodist Church, funerals and many benefits, where he was needed. He was a 12 year member of Girl Sout Troop 382. His latest enjoyment was with the monthly visits from the Southern Arizona Humane Society, where he helped with the laundry and animals. Mario was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. He was a humble quiet man who above all loved his music and his Lord.

Mario leaves a huge hole in our lives and hearts. The Rosary will be held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Pirtleville on Wednesday, July 18 at 7 p.m. The funeral will be at St. Bernard’s on Thursday at 9 a.m., officiated by Fr. Gilbert Malu.

Funeral arrangements were made through Espinosa Funeral Home.
