After two weeks of practice the newly formed Douglas Youth Basketball League kicked off its season last week.

Ninety kids, ages 6-13, are playing on 10 teams in two separate divisions. Games are played at Steven Elementary and Huber Middle School.

On July 9 the league began its season with the introduction of teams followed by two games.

In the first game the David’s Plumbing Thunder defeated the KDAP Celtics 19-6.

Top scorers for the Thunder were Aaron Arias led the Thunder in scoring with seven points while Jose Pro had six and Paige Mariscal, Jacob Parrish and Jerrilyn Vasquez each contributed two.

For the Celtics, Marco Buelna, Arnold Burquez and Oscar Sodari each had two.

In the next game the Backdrop Photography Bulls overcame an 11 point second half deficit to edged the Shooters Lakers 25-24.

Manuel Terrazas led the Bulls in scoring with 10 points. John Moore followed with nine and Ryan Arzac and Ramon Gonzales each contributed two. It was Gonzales’ two late in the game that gave the Bulls the lead and eventually the win.

For the Lakers Julian Encinas scored 10 points, Alan Cruz had six, Adrian Ruiz four and Julian Tanabe and Jamylette Rojas each contributed two.

On July 10 in minors play at Stevenson Elementary the Ortega’s Lakers defeated the B&D Lumber Celtics 12-2.

Diego Romero and Luis Guzman each scored four points to lead the Lakers in scoring. Emeterio Hernandez and Jonathon Guzman each followed with two.

Jesus Olivares had the lone bucket for the Celtics.

In the second game the YAC Suns edged the Mi Ranchito Heat 20-18.

Armando Sanchez led the Suns in scoring with eight points. Ed Posada and Marc Rodriguez each had four and Matthew Martinez and Aiden Rodriguez closed out with two each.

J.R. Padilla scored 12 points for the Heat. Emiliano Berthely, J.R. Zamora and Vicente Cardona each followed with two.

On July 11 the Krazy Dawgz Nets defeated the Backdrop Bulls 33-22.

Adrian Dominguez and Jude Romero each scored nine points for the Nets, Mike Quinonez had six, Jose Ballesteros five and Frank Ballesteros and Alex Vera-Galaz each had two.

Manuel Terrazas led the Bulls in scoring with eight points, Ramon Gonzales contributed six, John Moore four and Lauren Paun and Ryan Arzac each had two.

On July 12 the Krazy Dawgz Nets beat KDAP Celtics 43-26 in majors play at Huber.

Jude Romero scored a game high 21 points to lead the Nets in scoring, Adrian Dominguez followed with six, Frank Ballesteros and Miguel Ballesteros each had five, Jose Ballesteros four and Ray Aguirre two.

Arnold Burquez and Andrea Mora each scored six for the Cetlics, Marco Buelna had eight, Oscar Sodari four, Anthony Mora two.

In the game that followed the Shooters Lakers edged the David’s Plumbing Thunder 23-22.

Alonso Tapia scored seven points to lead the Thunder in scoring, Arias and Jose Ortiz each had four, Michael Quinonez three and Mariscal two.

Eric Anguiano led the Lakers with 10 points, Julian Encinas had six, Julian Tanabe four and Alan Cruz two.

In a minors game that was being played at Stevenson the Ortega’s Lakers knocked off the Power Zone Gym Bulls 20-5.

Hernandez led the Lakers in scoring with eight points, Romero and Guzman each had four and Ruben Leon and Rodrick Chernouski each scored two.

For the Bulls, Andrew Cota had three points; Hector Moreno two.

On July 12 also in minors play the YAC Suns knocked off the B&D Lumber Celtics 20-6.

Suns scorers were Marc Rodriguez with eight points, Armando Sanchez four, Matthew Martinez, Jahailey Encinas, Ed Posada and Aiden Rodriguez each had two.

For the Celtics, Olivares, Hunter and Tyler McLaughlin each had two.

In the second game the league is reporting the Mi Ranchito Heat and the Power Zone Gym Bulls played to an 8-8 tie at the end of regulation. No overtime period was played.

J.R. Zamora scored six points for the Heat.

Joseph Ramirez and Hector Moreno each scored four for the Bulls.

League organizer Gina Tartaglia said she is very pleased with how things are going. “The kids are learning the game while having a good time,” she said. “Each week we will enforce a few more rules so hopefully in a few weeks the bigger kids will be playing a true game of basketball while in the minors we continue working on basic fundamentals. I appreciate the hard work the coaches are putting in with their players as it is showing each time we go to games.”

Games continue this week in both the Stevenson and Huber Gyms.
