The combine tested strength, endurance and quickness.
Grant Watkins’ team began the session going through the combine and finishing with a time of 4:36.16.
Marcos Toscano’s squad followed and his team recorded a time of 4:21.59.
Dylan Guerrero’s squad was up next and they posted a 5:10.44.
Joey Alvarez’ squad closed out the first round with a time of 4:36.41.
In the second round Dylan’s and Joey’s team faced each other for third place.
Guerrero’s squad finished with a time of 4:21.50 while Alvarez’ team had a 4:27.78.
Marcos’ team finished with a 4:59.34 while Grant’s team posted a 4:09 winning the overall event.
Other members of Grant’s team were Blaze Rose, Stewart Hunt, Alexis Medina, Ernesto Loreto, Nick Ortega, Michael Molina and Fernando Rojas.
After the combine the players devoured some pizza that had been provided.
Douglas’ football coach Dick Keith said the kids have worked hard all summer and this was a fun way to end the summer session before practice starts July 30.
“A majority of these kids have been going strong for two months now,” he said. “We just put this together. It was just a fun night again showing strength, endurance, quickness. I think the kids had fun competing against each other.”
New regulations this year by the Arizona Interscholastic Association have done away with two-a-day practice sessions.
Keith said they are allowed a one-hour walk through in the morning followed a three-hour practice in the afternoon.
“Our one-hour walk through will be for special teams and our afternoon practice will be a regular practice,” he said.
Keith anticipates starting contact Aug. 6.
“We’re all ready,” the coach said. “We want the contact to start. Kids have been working hard and I really feel good about them.”
The coach said the offensive line, to a man, is squatting over 500 pounds.
Watkins is squatting 550; Jose Gutierrez is also at 550; Joey Alvarez, Toscano and Jason Linden are all squatting over 500.
“I’ve never had that many kids that strong,” he said. “It looks promising but you never know till contact starts.”
Keith, for the most part, feels good about the participation, he’s had this summer.
“There are some kids that I’m disappointed in because they are not here but it is what it is,” he said.
The first game will be Aug. 24 at home against Rio Rico.
