Two-hour pilot parking program

The Douglas City Council voted last week to suspend two-hour parking downtown for the next six months hoping it will help improve a struggling local economy.

This can be a good or bad move depending on how it is handled.

Parking in Douglas has been an issue for years. Many businesses do not have private parking and therefore park on the street. In doing so they occupy slots taken up by would be shoppers.

This decision can be good in the long term if done properly.

I’ve seen cars parked incorrectly at times taking up two to three spots because they claim the areas were not marked clearly.

I’ve also witnessed vehicles parked in handicap and loading zones saying “they will just be a minute.”

If people will obey the parking lanes and do their business then move so other people can park then this will be a good move and may work out in the end.

The downtown merchants will also need to cooperate and self police themselves and their employees. Failure to do so and leaving your vehicle parked in front of some ones business will only cause frustration and congestion.

With the holiday season just around the corner we need to jump start the economy and this is one way to do it.

" I haven't seen any increase in shoppers. I have seen the same cars parked in the same spots for the entire day now, day after day. I thinks its safe to assume they belong to the merchants and their employees. Just as anyone with any common sense would have realized would happen. Who had this brilliant idea? Now there is less money coming into the city due to reduced parking tickets. It will be interesting to see if tax revenue increases from sales or not. "

" Better, yet to jump start the economy., is vote and elect Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan....enough of the hidden agendas, by this administration. "
