CARE Fair a huge success

The 10th Annual Douglas CARE Fair took place Saturday, August 4 at the Veteran’s Memorial Park on Eighth Street.

The CARE Fair, Children's Assistance and Resource Event, was started by a University of Arizona Extension agent Lynus Whann.

Rosie Mendoza program coordinator for Chiricahua planned the fair from the very beginning. Chiricahua Community Health Center Inc., Douglas for Stronger Families and Cenpatico of Arizona were the main sponsors for the fair.

The planning committee was compromised by the following organizations and individuals; Nohemi de Castro of Chiricahua, Pilar Deziga of the Douglas Mexican Consulate, Jose Leon of Community Intervention Associates (CIA), Carol Huddleston of Turning Point, Alex Boneo with the Douglas Coalition, Jennie Molina of Douglas for Stronger Families Council, Diane Salazar, Mario Merino, Pamela Duarte of Pinal Hispanic Council, Lourdes Fernandez community member and Adriana Romero of Cenpatico.

An estimated 825 people attended the fair that had 36 different vendors and organizations taking part providing dental, medical, immunization treatments along with other resources that are available in the community.

Douglas for Stronger Families Council handed out backpacks to the first 250 children who showed up to the fair. They also distributed 500 tickets at the registration booth for children participating in the event allowing them to obtain school supplies, coupons, participate in raffles, and other activities.
