Friends far and near came together to support Rose

“Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog” rang true at the Tony Rose golf tournament on Saturday.

The tournament, held at the Douglas Golf Course, brought friends that had not seen each other in over 35 years came together to support Rose in his battle with cancer.

There was approximately over 100 people at the tournament with 52 actually there to play golf.

“We put this tournament together in 12 days” said longtime friend Bobby Segovia. “Billy (Salzbrenner), Shorty (Javier) Fimbres and I started calling people and we asked them to call their contacts, and it just come together.”

Many shared stories of playing football, basketball and baseball with Rose.

“He was special, he is special not just as an athletic but as a person,” Fimbres said.

“When people would talk about how great a player Tony was he would say ‘I wasn’t the only one on the field I had a great line great protection and great receivers’ that’s how humble he is,” his sister Margaret Baldnegro said.

Raul Ochoa and Jimmy Parra both shared their battles with cancer and how they survived and overcame this deadly disease and both feel that if anyone can beat this Rose can and will.

Rose was giving a standing ovation by all and a prayer was giving by friend Marty Oros.

“I feel overwhelmed and speechless by the support and love I have been given from all of these people and by the community,” Rose said.

“It is sad that it takes a tragedy to bring us together, but we are here now and will be here to support Tony, “Salzbrenner said.

Winners of the two person blind draw 18-hole tournament where first place Ruben Robles and J.J. Rose, second place George Bernal and Randy Walker, third place Jimmy Parra and Raul Ochoa, fourth place Bosco Selchow and David Campas and fifth place winners were Hilary Chavez and Brian Denham.
