On August 25 various members of the Cochise County 4-H club along with members of the Future Farmers of America, also known as FFA, helped prep the Cochise County Fair grounds for the fair.

The fair work day started at 8a.m and ended in the early afternoon after they were feed a generous meal by the fair association, 4-H members from Benson, Double Adobe, Pearce Sunsites, San Simon, Sierra Vista, Hereford, and Wilcox came together to set up.

“We had about 100 volunteers help out here today,” Connie Forsythe, 4-H club Office Assistant and volunteer, said.

Volunteers raked, cleaned, washed, and fixed pens. Once all pens were cleaned they moved them to the barn and set them up for preparation of the fair.

“We also do kind of a rough estimate on pen assignments, so that at this point we know how many animals are coming to the fair so we try to prepare the cages making sure we have enough and set up accordingly,” Forsythe said.

In the building exhibit they go through to make sure the tables and cabinets are good and sturdy and ready to accept any entries, she added.

Club members for 4-H start at the age of 5-18 and help set up for the fair every year.

“It helps them know, especially the first year kids, when they come out they see how things are set up, how things work, and where they are going to be at,” Forsythe said.

The Cochise County Fair will start Thursday, September 27 with small stock, swine and showmanship; Friday the fair have their dairy cattle and goats, horse show, breeding beef and sheep show, and the Cochise College rodeo. Saturday the Rodeo slack event will be held, steer and beef showmanship, small and large stock show. On Sunday the fair will be holding their livestock sale.
