SFD breaks ground on new station By Trisha MaldonadoDouglas Dispatch On August 31, the Sunnyside Fire Department had the ground breaking of their new fire house. After five years of planning and gathering funds, KWR Construction will start construction on the new fire house within a few weeks. The Fire Department will be located on Washington and Primrose, which will put them in their district. “Once the engineers come in and make sure everything is ok they will start construction,” Sunnyside Fire Chief Victor Rosadilla said. Currently the Sunnyside Fire Department has 15 volunteer fire men. The total cost of the fire house will be $345,000; $280,000 is from a USAD loan and $65,000 will be covered funds that the fire department has saved over the years. “It’s exciting because we have been in city limits for so long and now we will be in our actual district,” said Tom Schelling, business manager for the Sunnyside Fire Dept. On the backside of the two lots allocated for the fire house they will build a meeting room, storage room, restroom and the Chief’s office, on the front facing Washington, there will be three big bays for the fire trucks. “I had a choice a fire house or a fire truck,” Chief Rosadilla said. “I choose a fire house.” |
