FLI kicks off registration

Douglas Unified School District held their Family Leadership Institute (FLI), registration kick off Sept 20.

The FLI is a multifaceted educational curriculum focused on providing families with the knowledge, tools and inspiration to help their children succeed in school and in life.

Approximately 40 parents sat through a presentation from Consuelo Kickbusch via internet.

Kickbusch is a renowned, charismatic, passionate and influential speaker with a mission to empower the next generation of leaders.

Throughout her career, Kickbusch has shared her personal knowledge on becoming an effective leader in today’s global marketplace with hundreds of schools, colleges, universities, corporations, and government institutions both in the U.S. and abroad.

“Parents you are the first leaders and teachers to your children,” she said in the presentation.

Many of the parents and staff members that attended the training last spring shared the impact the training had on their lives.

“The FLI had a very strong impact on my life, the training made you look deep down in you at the skeletons in our lives,” Julie Johnson said. “I learned to be patient; to better myself that dreams are not only for our kids but also ourselves.”

The FLI is an institute that teaches parents and caregivers the art and skill of family leadership in support of academic achievement and life success for children.

“We learned that we are not alone,” Alex Boneo said. “That we are not the only people who do not know how to communicate with our children or know what is going on in their school.”

The FLI training will begin on Tuesday October 23; this is a 10 module curriculum.

“Once I attended the first class I had to continue to go,” Angelica Chavez said.

“This is only the beginning we will continue to take registrations up until Oct. 27,” Lucy Rosario FLI Coordinator said. “I will continue to send registration through the mail to parents and also with their kids. We had 25 parents sign up already.”

Rosario and the FLI trainers will be at the Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO) meetings for Stevenson Elementary on Sept. 24 from 6-7 p.m. and at both Sara Marley and Clawson Elementary on Sept. 26 from 6-7 p.m. taking registrations.

FLI will provide childcare for those attending the training through Douglas High School Mentor program. There will be 11 mentors who are currently taking classes in early childhood education; they will earn half a credit once they complete the program.

FLI training day and times will be: Oct. 23 from 6-8 p.m., Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Nov. 6 and 27 from 6-8 p.m. and the last class will be Dec. 1 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. All classes are held in the Douglas High School Library.

“This is a free training that will enrich your lives don’t let this opportunity pass you,” said Boneo.
