Gone but not forgotten

For the second time in less than a year Douglas has lost another one of its former City Councilmen.

Ramon “Hedgy” Jordan passed away last week at his home following a long battle with Alzheimer’s. His passing came five days after his 92nd birthday.

Days before his birthday his daughter, Ginny, wrote a letter to the editor asking people to send cards to her dad. The response was overwhelming as people did respond and Ginny said her dad enjoyed looking at the pictures on the cards and hearing from people who were unaware of his illness. It was the greatest theraphy one could have had.

Last November another former City Councilman Roberto “Bob” Fernandez passed away following a battle with cancer. He was 75.

I first met Bob when he chose to run for mayor against Ray Borane. Bob lost the election but gained my respect and appreciation.

I knew both these men and worked with them through the media while they served on the city council.

Ramon was already on the city council when I came to work at the Dispatch. I can still see him at the table where the City Council members sit joking with former council woman Margaret Shannon.

Shannon has since passed and while her devotion to the city continues the same can be said for Hedgy and Bob.

These council members truly cared about Douglas and wanted nothing more than to see this city thrive.

They may be gone but they are not forgotten. The good work they did for this town while they were on the council will continue to be remembered.
