The 77th Annual Labor Day Golf Tournament was held at the Douglas Golf Course August 31 through September 3, 2012.

The longest running tournament of its kind is hosted annually by the Douglas Golf and Social Club.

Ninety-six men and women came from across the country to play in this year’s event. Dave Foreman journeyed the furthest this year, coming all the way from Anchorage, Alaska.

This year’s tournament included players from 28 cities, nine states and three countries.

Gilbert Moncada and the staff at the golf course were up to the task of preparing the golf course for the sold out event. Good course conditions and beautiful weather helped make this one of the best tournaments in years.

Two person teams competed in three different formats.

Saturday was a two person scramble, Sunday a better ball and Monday was medal play. Southern Arizona Auto provided a 2012 Buick LaCrosse as a hole-in-one prize, but unfortunately, it went unclaimed and had to be returned to the dealership until next year.

The winners of the Championship Flight for the fourth consecutive year were the team of Luis Canez and Luis Rodriguez, who teamed to shoot a score of 271.7.

They were followed by Ruben and Armando Robles (274) and Bosco Selchow and Ken Herbert (278.5).

The B Flight was won by Augie Ballesteros and Ron Salmon (262.8). Second place was claimed by Armando and Alfonso Maza (268.2). Third place was the team of Beau Alred and Paul Carrasco (270.2).

Winning the C Flight were Ben Bermudez and Marco Paredes with a combined 259.9. Behind them were Rogelio Martinez and Joaquin Durazo (270.3) and the team of Karl Friskey and Tony Romero (272.5).

In the D Flight, winners George Lopez and Bobby Long carded a 269.3. Rocco Malta and Francisco Barrios took second (275.3) and third went to John Crocker and Phil McGee (278.9).

Low gross this year was won by reigning club champion Justin Uhriek (74) and low net by Marco Paredes (62).

Craig Munsey continued his record participation in the tournament having competed since 1963.

Next year’s tournament will be held August 30 through September 2, 2013.

Another full field is expected.
