DHS golfers win home opener

The Douglas Bulldog golf team was scheduled to have two matches last week.

Douglas hosted Pueblo in its home opener Sept. 4 and won easily. Two days later the Bulldogs were in Marana only to have their match rained out.

Against Pueblo the Bulldogs shot a 173 over the back nine holes at the Douglas Golf Course. Pueblo had only three of the five golfers required to score and therefore did not post an overall team score.

Martin Valenzuela shot a team low of 43 that day to lead the Bulldog golfers. Robbie Romero followed with a 44. Jake Salmon shot a 45, Adrian Vildosola shot a 46 and Eric Valenzuela closed out with a 49.

Douglas’ golf coach Bosco Selchow said he was somewhat disappointed with the scores feeling that since this is the Bulldogs home course the team, as a whole, could have played better.

“We were 10 shots off the target score we need for state,” the coach said. “It’s not so much as beating your opponent now. It’s about shooting that state qualifying score.”

The coach feels there is room for improvement and all his golfers will need to bring their scores down if they hope to qualify for state.

The rained out match with Marana will more than likely be rescheduled for this week, the coach said, giving Douglas two road matches Tuesday and Thursday.
