Lady Bulldogs go 1-2 again By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch For the second straight week the Douglas Lady Bulldogs volleyball team went 1-2. Douglas began the week Sept. 4 beating Rio Rico in five games. The Lady Bulldogs won game one and two 25-21, 25-18, dropped games three and four 9-25, 24-26 before coming back in game five to win 15-13 taking the match three games to two. Jenise Olivarria recorded 19 assists, two kills and four digs this match; Aleen Nunez had seven kills and eight digs; Kianna Ross five digs, four aces and four kills. Aleen Alegria had three digs and an ace; Jennifer Montoya six kills and Karina Avechuco 15 kills, 17 digs and three blocks. The next night Douglas had a rematch with Empire who had just beaten Douglas the week before in Vail. Douglas lost the first game 17-25, won the second and third 26-24 and 25-10 before losing the next two 8-25 and 7-15. Nunez had 10 digs and five kills this match. Valeria Verdugo nine digs, Ross 10 digs, Yadira Cuevas three digs and a kill, Alegria seven digs; Montoya three kills, Ruby Sandoval five assists, Abigail Nieblas five kills and Avechuco 10 kills, nine blocks and three digs. Having played 10 games in two days not to mention the three games plus the tournament the week before Douglas’ coach Carlos Chavez said his team had “no legs” when it went on the road to lay Benson Thursday. The Lady Bobcats stumped Douglas in three straight winning 25-15, 25-12 and 25-13. Olivarria had three assists, Nunez two kills and two digs Montoya two kills, Victoria Sandoval two aces and Avechuco three kills, five blocks and eight digs. The coach said his team started off the week well but then struggled against Empire and had nothing left for Benson. “Benson is a good team but I feel we could have given them a better game,” Chavez said. The Lady Bulldogs, 2-4, hosted Bisbee on Tuesday night and will be at Safford on Thursday. |
