DUSD Board moves quickly through agenda

The Douglas School Board of Education breezed through its agenda at its Oct. 2 board meeting finishing in just under an hour.


The board began the meeting with a moment of silence to remember former Bulldog Tony Cortez Rose who passed away last week as well as slain Border Patrol agent Nicolas Ivey.

The board was then given a brief presentation by Douglas Border Patrol Agent Edgardo Garayua regarding the Douglas Border Patrol Station Citizen’s Academy which is scheduled to run every Tuesday for seven weeks beginning Oct. 16, 2012. There 12 individuals from around Douglas, all over he age of 18 who will be selected to go through an academy much like the regular Border Patrol agents do and get a feel for what they experience in preparation for working a long the border. In other action the board approved the appointment of Dara Logan as a district hearing officer for the 2012/13 school year.

The board also approved the Fiscal Year 2013 capital plan that was submitted to the State of Arizona School Facilities Board as required by law and approved an Intergovernmental Agreement for Cochise County.

The release of the DHS Student School Directory to the U.S. Military was also approved by the board and the final approval for the 2011/12 DUSD #27 Annual Financial Report was granted by the board.

The board also gave its approval for the following Cochise College students: Estefania Cuadras, Zueyzan Montano, Rebecca Arnold, Zulma Favela, Cameron Tarbox, Wauldo Paco, Jacelene Garcia, Denise Vasquez, Jackie Salmon, Mia Montano, Lorena Greer and Angelica Alvarez to perform classroom observations at the elementary, junior high and high schools.

Donations from Target, Wal-Mart, Rodel Charitable Foundation of Arizona plus a $10,000 donation from the University of Arizona to Faras Elementary to purchase school supplies were also approved by the board.

The board approved the hiring of John Murphy, Robert Marrufo, Enrique Peralta and Barbara Rojas as well as volunteers Rikki Valdez, Violeta Lopez and Maria Parmley.

Barry Horst had his resignation approved effective Oct. 19, 2012 from the More Able Students (M.A.S.) program.

DUSD Business Manager Cesar Soto reported to the board the district is doing well financially and enrollment figures show there are 3,955 students currently in the district.

The DUSD is on fall break all this week and school resumes Oct. 15.

The next board meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
