4 vehicle accident in front of polling place

While voters were out Tuesday, Nov. 6 at the various polling places around town officers from the Douglas Police Department were responding to a four vehicle accident in front of voting place on 10th Street.


According to Sgt. Jose Duarte of the Douglas Police Department the accident occurred shortly after 6:30 p.m. when a blue 1989 Chevy Camaro, was traveling west on 10th Street and stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk, walking south. The driver had stopped for the pedestrian that was crossing the street coming from the polling place on the other side of the street.

The Chevy Camaro was then rear ended by a grey 1999 Cherokee, that could not stop in time for the vehicle stopping for the pedestrian. The Cherokee was then struck from behind by a green Chevy Malibu that also could not stop in time for the first two vehicles and was struck by the fourth vehicle, a green Nissan Sentra, which was also following behind.

Sgt. Duarte said no injuries were reported at the time of the accident and the first vehicle was cited for not having insurance at the time of the accident and no use of seatbelt, the other three vehicles were also cited for failure to avoid a collision.

The pedestrian was also uninjured and the street was closed for approximately for one hour while all the vehicles were moved from the street.

    " To just a thought: It's actually a collision, someone must have been mistaken. If they hit the person from behind then they obviously didn't have enough space between themselves and the car in front of them. It's basic three second rule. "
