A new tradition may have been started Oct. 17 when the Douglas Lady Bulldogs traveled 25 miles up the road to Warren Ball Park to play the Bisbee Lady Pumas in the first ever powder puff football game.

Unfortunately for Douglas fans this game was all Bisbee’s from the start as the Lady Pumas scored the first three times they had the ball and never looked back beating Douglas 36-0.

The game was flag football played in two, 20 minute halves but there were plenty of hard hits and knock downs by both sides. On the first play of the game Douglas’ Erica Romero was the victim of a forearm shiver into the collar of Romero who went down and was later ruled out of the game.

Bisbee proved to be a little more physical than the Douglas team which had two regular football players playing, Barbara Jordan who plays on the junior varsity football team and Marilyn Grijalva who plays with the varsity Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs threatened to score but were denied late in the game.

A mother of one of the Bisbee players brought the idea up to their school’s athletic director who liked the idea and proposed it to Douglas’ new athletic director Stephanie Phillips.

Phillips agreed to the game and now a tradition has been started.

Next years game will be played in Douglas.
