Bulldogs finish sixth at tourney By Bruce WhettenDouglas Dispatch The Douglas Bulldog wrestling team finished sixth in the field of 16 teams at the William Bell Invitational held this past weekend at Pueblo High School in Tucson. Tucson High ended up winning the tournament followed by Desert View, Sahuaro, Sabino, Pubelo, Douglas, Vista Grande and Cholla. The Bulldogs went 5-2 in pool play beating a all-star team 45-28 in the first match before falling to Desert View 49-24 in the second match. The Bulldogs then beat Palo Verde 51-28 and Santa Rita 63-12 before losing to Sabino 47-36. The Bulldogs then came back to beat Cholla 45-33 and Casa Grande 54-30 before falling to Pueblo 48-33 in the match that decided fifth and sixth place. Douglas’ Michael Montoya finished third overall at 103 pounds posting a 6-3 record on the day. He pinned Joseph Felix of Tucson High in 4:14 in the consolation match. At 113-pounds Rogelio Martinez finished fourth overall with a 6-4 record. CJ Ross was 4-4 at 120 pounds; Marco Gonzales, 2-6 at 125; Israel Ybarra was 5-3 at 132 pounds; Jacob Yabarra 4-4 at 138; Michael Molina 3-5 at 145; Brandon Moreno, 3-5 at 152; Andrew Parra, 3-5 at 160, Joey Alvarez was 7-1 at 170; Brandon Cardenas 2-6 at 182; Carlos Estrada 6-2 at 195. At 220-pounds, Rolando Ruiz took fourth place finishing with a 6-4 record. At 285 Jason Linden finished 7-3 and in third place pinning Eduardo Cordova of Desert View in just 47 seconds. “Over all we did a great job,” Douglas’ Wrestling Coach Richard Ross said. “We have some work to do but we are improving so much.” On Nov. 28 the Bulldogs lost to Buena 71-12 in a dual match in Tucson. According to information provided to the Dispatch by the Douglas coaches, Douglas’ Jose Alcala pinned Buena’s Isaac Plumb in 1:48 at 106 pounds; A 113 Martinez lost by technical fall 16-0; at 120 David Garcia of Douglas won by forfeit. At 126: Israel Andrade was pinned in 1:40; at 132 Edwardo Andrade was pinned in 36 seconds. At 145 Raymond Alvarez was pinned in 1:08. At 152, Carlos Estrada was pinned in 5:35; at 160 Joseph Alvarez was pinned in 1:06; at 170 Brandon Cardenas was pinned in 54 seconds; at 182 Humberto Del Hierro was pinned in 2:29; at 195 Kevin Romero was pinned in 2:20; at 220 Nick Leigh was pinned in 2:19 and at 285 Robbie Young was pinned in 3:45. The Bulldogs first home match will be this afternoon at 4:30 against Sabino and Amphi. The annual Douglas Invitational takes place this weekend in the Douglas High School Gym. |
