It took four games but on Thursday, Nov. 29 the Douglas Lady Bulldogs soccer team gave first year head coach Mario Romero his first win.

The 2-1 win at Douglas High School came against Douglas’ border town rivals, the Nogales Apaches.

Nogales led 1-0 at the half.

With 31:48 remaining in the match Ana Francia Morales booted the ball past the Nogales goalie tying the match at 1-1.

With just over seven minutes remaining before overtime Kianna Ross scored giving the Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 edge that would hold up for their first win.

Nogales out shot Douglas 15-11. Amanda Teran had 11 saves at goalie for the Lady Bulldogs.

The next night Douglas hosted Rio Rico and the Lady Bulldogs picked up their second straight win in just as many nights beating the Lady Hawks 4-1 at Armando DeLucas Stadium.

Yadira Cuevas scored Douglas’ first goal in the fifth minute. Ross then scored goals in the ninth and 11th minute and Cuevas scored again in the 16th minute giving the Lady Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.

Rio Rico scored its lone goal with just over 10 minutes left in the match.

The Lady Bulldogs out shot Rio Rico 25-15. Teran had four saves at goalie while Maria Palacios had five.

On Tuesday, Nov. 27 the Lady Bulldogs fell to Safford 3-1 in Safford. Two of Safford’s goals came via penalty kicks.

Erika Romero had the lone goal for Douglas early in the second half. Douglas out shot Safford 27-22.

“The girls played well but (our) inexperience showed,” Coach Romero said after the loss. “We had some scoring opportunities just couldn’t put them in the net.”

Amanda Teran had seven saves in the box for Douglas.

After the back to back wins Coach Romero remarked that he and the other coaches are starting to see the girls now start playing as a team.

“They’re starting to understand what their role at their position is,” he said. “We play aggressive against some pretty aggressive teams and when you play to aggressive you get beat.”

The Lady Bulldogs, 2-4, were in Tucson last night taking on a Sahurao team that beat them 10-0 last week. yA
