The Douglas Lady Bulldogs kicked off their 2012-13 basketball season last week winning two three games.
The Lady Bulldogs began the week on the road beating Empire 45-32.
Douglas led 9-5 at the end of the first quarter and 21-14 at the half.
In the second half the Lady Bulldogs outscored their hosts 24-18.
Karina Avechuco led Douglas in scoring with 14 points, Vanessa Ovando followed with 11 and Sofia Pena contributed six.
On Friday the Lady Bulldogs were in Sahuarita and were beaten 53-30.
Douglas struggled offensively all night long scoring in single digits all four quarters.
Sahuarita led 16-8 at the end of the first quarter and 27-17 at the half.
Douglas was outscored 10-5 in the third quarter and 16-8 in the fourth as Sahuarita handed the Lady Bulldogs their first loss.
Veronica Barraza led Douglas in scoring this game with nine points while Barraza contributed eight.
“This was a very poor showing for the lady Bulldogs with Avechuco going down and several other team problems including injuries and athletic suspensions,” Douglas’ coach Clint Hill said after the loss. “We were left very thin as a team.”
On Saturday, Dec. 1 the Lady Bulldogs hosted the Willcox Cowgirls in the Lady Bulldogs home opener and came away with a 42-30 win.
Willcox was coached by former Elfrida resident and Valley Union baseball coach Calvin King.
Tied 10-10 in the second quarter Douglas went on a 9-0 run to close out the first half.
The Lady Bulldogs then held Willcox scoreless in the third quarter outscoring the Cowgirls 15-0 taking a 34-10 lead into the final period.
Willcox outscored Douglas 20-8 in the final quarter clawing back to within 12.
Barraza led Douglas in scoring with 19 points, Avechuco contributed six and Pena and Ovando each contributed four.
Douglas’ Coach Clint Hill praised his team for their effort saying this game was decided in the second and third quarter where Douglas outscored Willcox 25-6.
Douglas, 2-1, hosted Tombstone last night and will play in the Benson Invitational this Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Douglas JV’s kicked off their season Nov. 27 beating Empire 33-19.
Nancy Rodriguez led Douglas in scoring with 17 points, eight steals and five assists; Jocelyn Vasquez followed 10 points and eight rebounds; Crystal Zamora had four points, five rebounds, four steals and eight assists; Ruby Valencia had two points and two rebounds; Jessica Quinonez had five rebounds, two steals and three assists; Vanessa Moreno had five rebounds and two steals.
“I’m very happy on how the girls started off our season,” Coach Lorena Tapia said. “They went to Empire focused and determined to win. It was a great team effort.”
