Huppenthal visits CAS HS

Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal visited the Center for Academic Success High School on Wednesday, Nov. 07 as part of a statewide tour of exceptional schools.


CAS High School received a performance profile letter grade of "A" for the 2011-12 school year. Superintendent Huppenthal visited CAS HS to see for himself "what they were doing right."

He visited several classrooms, observing lessons in Trigonometry, Advanced English Literature, Economics, and Art. He also addressed the students, spoke about the value of their education they were receiving, and encouraged them to continue their education beyond high school. He asked individual students questions about their plans for the future and advised them to take advantage of every resource the school had to offer in order to fulfill their dreams.

CAS HS Principal Marcela Munguia said that the teachers, staff, and students were excited and gratified by the visit from Superintendent Huppenthal.

Munguia remarked that it was nice to be noticed and appreciated for their successes. She noted that CAS also has an elementary and a middle school in Douglas. These schools also did quite well, each earning a performance profile letter grade of "B" with the elementary school missing "A" grade by only three points out of 200 possible.

Jose Isaac Chavez and Lizeth Molina, representing CAS High School students, greeted Superintendent Huppenthal and his team and escorted them throughout their visit.

Principal Munguia was accompanied by CAS Executive Director Vada Phelps, Superintendent Dr. Don Derrick, and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Linda Denno.

Accompanying Superintendent Huppenthal on his visit to CAS were other Arizona Department of Education staff, including Associate Superintendent Marv Lamar, Deputy Associate Superintendent Ralph Romero, Chief of Staff Merve Blanchi, Highly Effective Schools Liaison Jason Wojcik, Education Program Specialist Karen Lattin, and Public Information Officer Molly Edwards.
